Previous Post — Reflection on Christian Unity. In the past few years of exploring the life of St. Thanks to the blogosphere, I have most recently come across Brother Dan P. His insights into life, faith and culture are excellent and compelling. However, rather than trying to tell you about him myself, I thought I would have chat with him and let him tell you about himself. Hope you enjoy! Dan Horan: That is perhaps the most frequent question I receive, yet I never have a really good or concise response.
The basic story is that from a very young age I was fascinated with the Church. I was very active in my parish all the way through elementary and high school and when it came time for college, I felt pretty sure I wanted to study to be a priest for my home diocese. I only looked at Catholic colleges where I could study theology. I loved it. And I eventually came to believe wholeheartedly that there was really no other way of life, no religious charism that made more sense for me than the Franciscans.
The more I read the writings of Francis and studied the tradition, the clearer it became and the more I fell in love with the rich history, example and way of life. I feel very lucky to have such an opportunity to connect with a community that brings to fruition the expression of Gospel living with which I most closely identify.

Words failed me when I read this. This despicable ‘man’ may just be the most wicked clergyman I have ever seen. What an absolute disgrace. A goodly bishop, which Chicago doesn’t presently have, should defrock this sandaled cockroach at once for uttering false teaching, and promoting its representation in the public forum. I agree with the previous poster who said that there is a high probability of the unnatural in his preferences.

It may not be surprising, then, that I had mixed feelings about the idea of spending 10 days in solitude secluded from the modern world in a hermitage. I am a Franciscan novice. Both of those words are open to misinterpretation, so let me clarify. I am a Franciscan friar, a member of the religious order of men founded by St. Francis of Assisi. As such I live following the Rule of St. Francis , which outlines a way of life modeled after the Gospel. A friar is neither a monk nor a secular cleric, but a man who lives in a community of brothers who profess to live with nothing of their own poverty , without marrying chastity and under the direction of their superiors obedience.
While this outline does little justice to the complexities of Franciscan life, it is at least a foundation. Novices, quite literally, are beginners. In our way of life a novice is one in his second year of what totals five to seven years of formation, or training. I mention my relative youth because it directly affects my hermitage experience and future experiences of solitude.

When one of my editors heard about this, she suggested that it might make a good book and that I should also keep that in the back of my mind. In the end, it turned out that the format and style did lend itself well to a book, something very close to a short Lenten retreat or series of reflections that others might appreciate.
What makes Franciscan though on these two topics different than others?
This morning I read a very intriguing blog post written by my colleague and a friend of many here at Daily Theology, Dan Horan, O. Barash is no stranger to selling books on related topics. One should note from the titles that Barash is no Richard Dawkins. Yes, we are perfectly good animals, maybe even the cleverest, but returning to the distinctive foundational questions of both fields — how vs.
But I also want to defend Barash on this point. The existence of a vast technological and material culture that is, the existence of stuff like computers tricks us into thinking that we are something that we are not—we are not aliens from another world. No more. The most potent take-home message of evolution is the not-so-simple fact that, even though species are identifiable just as individuals generally are , there is an underlying linkage among them — literally and phylogenetically, via traceable historical connectedness.
Moreover, no literally supernatural trait has ever been found in Homo sapiens; we are perfectly good animals, natural as can be and indistinguishable from the rest of the living world at the level of structure as well as physiological mechanism. One can affirm the veracity of evolution as I certainly do , but disagree about the moral quality of that process.
But just a smidgen of biological insight makes it clear that, although the natural world can be marvelous, it is also filled with ethical horrors: predation, parasitism, fratricide, infanticide, disease, pain, old age and death — and that suffering like joy is built into the nature of things. The more we know of evolution, the more unavoidable is the conclusion that living things, including human beings, are produced by a natural, totally amoral process, with no indication of a benevolent, controlling creator.
Evolution brought beauty from creation, brought love from rocks, brought life from nothing.
