Dota 2’s US East matchmaking servers are down because somebody cut a cable

Valve continues to struggle when it comes to Dota 2 ranked matchmaking and the publisher is rolling out another new solution. The latest Dota 2 update implemented a new way to queue for ranked games in the form of Fast Queue. The new system serves to speed up the ranked matchmaking experience, which has been mired of late by brutally long queue times. Fast Queue players are prioritized by the matchmaker, allowing them to enjoy shorter matchmaking times. Players are automatically enrolled in Fast Queue if they select every role for ranked matchmaking, and can earn credits towards future Fast Queue games with their preferred role. Anyone that follows professional Dota 2 players has seen them gripe about matchmaking times at one point or another, but that has been impossible to ignore of late. This is particularly troublesome for pro players, who struggled to find games quickly even before restrictions were applied.

Dota 2: Matchmaking Fix Released

Today, Valve released an update that stated that Immortal players are now only going to be matched up with players within Divine or Immortal ranks. Prior to this, Divine players who partied with medals lower than them would often be queued up with Immortal players, which lead to even further frustration. However, this may still not be enough. It is still an acknowledgement that Valve will be making steps in the right direction. Of course, the DOTA 2 community is not without its own solutions as well.

DOTA 2 Matchmaking: Valve’s New Update Leaves Holes, Here’s How We Can Fix Them. Mamoon Sabri. 18 October

Valve has released a new update for Dota 2 which it says is focused on “improving the matchmaking experience” in the popular multiplayer game. One of the major new changes is a requirement that asks players to register a phone number to play in ranked online multiplayer matches. From April 20, players have two weeks to register their mobile phone number. However, from May 4, accounts that do not have a phone number linked to it will no longer be able to participate in ranked play.

Phone numbers can be unlinked from an account so that a new one can be swapped in, but there is a three-month waiting period before the original number can be tied to a new account. This, Valve says, “is to prevent using the same number on multiple accounts. The update also brings back the Solo Queue, so players in ranked matchmaking can opt to only be matched up with other solo players. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority.

Valve has also improved detection for “clear cases of intentional feeding,” which involves players sacrificing themselves to the enemy so the opposing hero can accrue experience and power quicker. Additionally, bot detection has been improved. Finally, Valve has made ranked matchmaking unavailable in South Africa, India, and Dubai because their “low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses.

We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues. In December Dota 2 received a massive overhaul that reworked the game’s HUD, refined the map, hero console, top bar, and shop.

How to fix matchmaking in dota 2

Getting proper matchmaking implemented in games, particularly MOBAs, is very important and Valve have been working towards getting it right. The most recent patch to hit the game continued to make improvements to the system, but there’s still a lot of work to be done, as evidenced by the long queue times. Things have gotten so bad with the queues that Valve had to release a statement to let players know they are looking into it.

They explained they might roll back some of the quality settings for this weekend as they work to figure out what is causing the long wait times. It’s never good to see a team run into snags like this, especially when it comes to something as important as matchmaking, but the developers felt like having players get into games was more important in the meantime. We are aware of matchmaking queue times taking a very long time and are working on improving it.

Valve’s New Patch Breaks Ranked Matchmaking. Players Randomly Gain/Lose 1000+ MMR

Dota 2 received a big matchmaking update yesterday, requiring players to register a phone number if they want to continue playing ranked games and finally, reintroducing the much-requested solo queue. You’ll have until the 4th May to link your account with a unique phone number before these changes come into effect, but after that, it’ll be set in stone. So what’s the thinking here? Well, Valve hopes it’ll address one of Dota 2’s bigger problems: players using multiple accounts to abuse the game’s matchmaking setup.

In particular, this will make ‘smurfing’ a little trickier higher-level players creating secondary accounts to play at a lower skill rating.

The official Twitter account of dota 2 recently tweeted, informing the community of over 40, bans to player accounts abusing matchmaking.

Dota 2 is losing players, which will make finding games harder for the players who are left. But it is a troubling sign for what was once the dominant force in Steam gaming. What’s causing players to leave? That can be hard to pin down, but we have a few ideas. A new player toxicity system was implemented earlier last year that is handing out 2-decade bans for excessively toxic player behavior. That has likely caused more than a few forceful ejections from the Dota 2 community, given the legendary toxicity that online MOBAs endure.

Another factor might be the Hong Kong protests. Besides causing a significant number of Hong Kong players to stop playing in order to take part in the protests, players were also banned from Dota 2 for typing in anti-China messages during The International But the most likely reason is just that Dota 2 is old. The game first released in , and since then it’s gone on to become the biggest game in eSports history.

However, the game has matured and older players are likely moving on to different, newer games. If new players don’t make their way to Dota 2 to replace them, then overall player count decreases. This could lead to a downward spiral of players as fewer players make matchmaking more difficult.
